AMK – Network Upgrade

AMK - Network Upgrade Complete network review and optimisation

After being brought on board to take over one of our clients’ IT management, we set about identifying and cataloguing their current IT infrastructure. This included over 80 PCs and 5 servers, across 6 sites throughout England. Much of the hardware was getting towards the end of its useful lifespan, and we set about gradually improving the situation, identifying areas of urgent need and tackling those first.

We then set to improving the back-end of the infrastructure by introducing a new virtualised server environment to improve reliability and scalability. This one server replaced five others that were coming to the end of their useful lifespan, minimising points-of-failure, and bringing everything to one easy-to-manage place.

The Challenge

We set out to optimise and improve an ageing IT environment with minimal disruption and cost to our client. For many years problems had been “patched” to work again, without identifying a real fix for the core issue.

The problems were spread out across six sites across the UK, with each site requiring fast and reliable communication with the HQ in Dewsbury.

The Solution

We initially identified the entire scope of the network that AMK had which included over 80 PCs, 10 Servers, 15 network switches and innumerable other bits and pieces. Condensing this down into categories such as “Business Critical”, “End of Life”, “Reusable” we were able to come up with a plan to stream-line their entire network, cut out points of failure, and improve the day-to-day operations.

After the initial survey and improvements were complete, we set about replacing the actual PCs and Servers that were most needed, but were old, slow, or causing problems. Spreading this process out over several months we were able to minimise cost and disruption, whilst also targeting areas that needed to be upgraded straight away.
